Some terminology explained...
Passive sites have the content permanently written into their pages and are ideal as an 'on-line brochure', providing customers with 24/7 access to your business.
Passive sites are the least costly to create and represent around 95% of all sites on the web... including this one!
Dynamic sites have a framework of page templates, with their content inserted from a dedicated database.
Input forms allow you to access and update this database content yourself... safely and securely.
Although more costly to develop, dynamic sites are invaluable when managing an on-line catalogue or store with a high product turnover and are able to interface directly with off-line stock or accounting systems.
Note: Ecommerce simply refers to any site with the ability to accept payment by credit or debit card, or proprietary systems, such as Paypal. E-commerce functions can be incorporated into either passive or dynamic sites.

How much is a website?
There are four costs to consider when planning a passive website.
1: Domain name and website hosting...
You should expect to pay between £25 & £50 per year for your domain registration and good quality, reliable, hosting with email included.
ipinx will be happy to recommend the optimum package for your type of business.
2: The site design and construction...
This is the most variable element; the number of 'pages', the amount of functionality, design effort, copywriting and image generation that is required will all effect the final cost.
For your guidance, a simple, hand crafted site can cost from as little as £149, although the average passive site spend is in the region of £900 with content generation and additional services.
(The three case studies to the right will give you a more accurate indication of likely costs.)
3: Search engine optimisation (SEO)...
Every site built by ipinx is structured to make it accessible by all major search engines... but competition on the internet is fierce, so specific SEO work may be needed to climb above your competitors in search engine results.
See: SEO & web marketing.
4: Support & maintenance...
ipinx offer very cost-effective maintenance and support contract at just £8 a month that will cover the cost of reasonable updates to your site plus email set-up and management.

Dynamic website development costs.
Software and database design will, of course, increase overall costs... but this may be from a few hundred to several thousands of pounds, depending upon the required complexity.
The Bearings Index example to the right offers a guide to the price of functionality.
